Toronto FC fires coach Chris Armas after losing out against DC United

TORONTO – Toronto FC fired manager Chris Armas on Sunday after a 7-1 win at DC United, the club’s sixth straight loss.

With the first-year manager, Toronto (1-8-2) has failed to win in seven games and ranks last in the 27-team league.

Toronto is in the midst of its second worst start to a season. Only in 2012 did he have a worse record, when the club lost its first nine games and reached five points until matchday 13 (1-10-2).

Toronto has had several problems this year, after the club has been forced to try to come back in games.

The team allowed goals in minutes two and eight into the game against DC United on Saturday, bringing them to eight goals allowed in the first 15 minutes of a game, the worst mark in the league. The team is 0-7-1 when it concedes the first goal.

Toronto is last in the league, conceding 2.45 goals per game.

The team had to move to the United States for the second consecutive season due to travel restrictions due to the pandemic.

Armas, 48, was hired Jan. 13 as Toronto’s 10th coach.

As an elite midfielder, Armas spent 12 years in MLS – two with the LA Galaxy and 10 with Chicago Fire FC. In 1998 he helped the Fire, the expansion team, win the MLS Cup and the US Open Cup. He reached the Supporters Shield in 2003 and three more of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with Chicago (2000, 2003, 2006).
