Tornado Watch, Debby’s Remains – Telemundo New York (47)

More heavy rain associated with the remains of the Debby’s tropical depression The tri-state area hit Friday, days after powerful storms dumped 2 inches of rain per hour, and tornadoes are even possible.

A tornado watch has been issued for more than half a dozen counties in New Jersey, along with Sullivan and Orange counties in New York, and Pike County in Pennsylvania. It is valid until evening.

Check the latest weather warnings for your neighborhood here. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. Here you will learn the difference between a tornado watch, warning and emergency.

Any rain through Friday morning will be light and scattered, but as the remnants of Debby pass just west of the tri-state area, heavier showers and strong to severe storms will be a problem.

Debby will push tropical moisture to the coast as it moves north and joins a unique front. The risk of flooding in the northeastern US will increase as water deepens Friday afternoon and evening as Debby approaches. Rain and storms will increase in the late afternoon and evening, when heavy rain and severe weather are likely.

Rainfall at 1 to 2 inches per hour is possible again, as was the case earlier this week, so flooding is a major concern associated with this system. The worst of the rain and storms are expected to pass over the western New York metropolitan area. That shifts the greatest risk of flooding to the Mid-Hudson Valley, Catskills and Poconos.

Fortunately, Debby won’t stop over our area like it did on the Carolina coast. Instead, it moves quickly, controlling water levels. In contrast, areas of North Carolina and South Carolina accumulated about a foot of rain in 24 hours as Debby gathered over the region.

Near the coast, rain totals will remain under 2 inches in most places.

Some remote areas could see totals of 3 to 4 inches inland. This is in addition to the 2 to 5 inches of rain that fell on Tuesday.

Along with the risk of flooding, severe storms could cause damage on Friday. The main concern is damage to straight line winds. Gusts above 50 mph could snap tree branches and down power lines.

Additionally, weak, short-lived tornadoes are possible, especially in Pennsylvania, western New Jersey, and the Catskills region. However, one or two tornadoes could pop up anywhere in the tri-state area, so make sure you have a way to receive severe weather alerts on your phone.

Heavy rain could lash Pennsylvania and New York for much of the day Friday. In the New York metropolitan area, the schedule will be narrower: between mid-afternoon and midnight.

The rain will stay until around midnight, and the good news is that all precipitation will leave the area by early weekend, leaving us with sunshine, lower humidity, and pleasant temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday and the beginning of next week are looking beautiful.
