A severe storm wreaked havoc in the United States on Friday. The tornadoes hit five states.

According to Amazon, a warehouse in Illinois was in the middle of a shift change when the tornado struck. At least six people died.

The emergency services do not expect survivors to stay behind and carry out a rescue operation.

Satellite imagery shows the extent of destruction after a historic tornado devastated an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois, killing six people Friday night. A severe storm swirled through central America on Friday, causing tornadoes in Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri. Dozens of deaths are expected. Meteorologists suspect that one of the tornadoes, the so-called “Quad State Tornado”, could have set the record for the longest uninterrupted tornado in US history.

Edwardsville Fire Department chief James Whiteford said at a press conference on Saturday that the number of Amazon employees could not be determined precisely because a shift was changing at the time of the disaster. Whiteford also confirmed that 150 yards of the Amazon building collapsed during the tornado after both sides of the building collapsed inward, causing the roof to collapse, the television station “KMOV” reported.

The emergency services do not expect that there are still survivors and have switched their rescue operation to a rescue mission. Whiteford said the recovery is expected to take three more days, with the search being carried out in daylight.
