According to foreign media, filming on Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s planned disaster film sequel “Tornado” will begin next spring, with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark Smith writing the script and Steven Spielberg as producer. It was previously reported that Top Gun 2 director Joseph Kosinski is directing, but he’s busy working on an F1 racing movie with Brad Pitt and is looking for a new director.
It is reported that Elizabeth Chai Vasahui and Jin Guowei, director of “Free Rock Climbing”, Dan Trachtenberg, director of “Predator: Prey”, and Taravis Knight, director of “Bumblebee”, are among the candidates on the list.
The original film, released in 1996, starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as a couple on the brink of divorce chasing a search tornado. The sequel will focus on Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s daughter. Helen Hunt is expected to return, but Bill Paxton passed away a few years earlier and unfortunately we will miss him.
“Tornado” is a representative of the disaster films in the 90s. The behind-the-scenes training is very strong. Director Jane de Bont once directed “Speed of Life”, screenwriter Michael Crichton is the original author of “Jurassic Park” and the producer is the famous Steven Spielberg.
