Tori Spelling Opens Up About Filing for Divorce on New Podcast
Tori Spelling, the famous actress from 90210, has recently filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years, Dean McDermott. In her new podcast, misSPELLING, Spelling candidly shared her side of the story, providing insight into the decision behind the separation. Spelling’s announcement comes after the news broke on Friday, confirming the divorce filing.
An Emotional Revelation
Speaking openly on her new podcast, Spelling expressed her emotional state, saying, “I just filed for divorce. Whoa, I just said the words that I’ve said in my head for, like, 16 years. Wild.” Clearly, Spelling’s decision was not an easy one to make.
Telling McDermott
During the recording of her podcast, Spelling called her husband to let him know that the news of the divorce filing had become public. Addressing the conversation, she revealed that McDermott expressed concern about the optics of her filing first. Spelling stated, “I feel like I deserve to file first, then… Because those are things that I would never have divulged to somebody and you did.”
Despite the tension, Spelling ended the call by telling McDermott, “I love you.” It is evident that their relationship, like any, had its complexities and difficulties.
Challenges and Fairytale Beginnings
Spelling shared insights into the challenges faced in her marriage. Reflecting on their early courtship, she described it as a “fairytale romance.” However, she admitted that their relationship changed once they had children. Spelling explained, “Everything became focused on the kids and I kind of left him in a way. And I get it. It doesn’t excuse his behavior and everything he did.”
Despite the challenges, the couple stayed together, even though Spelling believed their marriage should not have lasted 18 years. She once told a friend that she would leave her ex once her children could unbuckle their own car seats. However, as they continued having more children, her plans changed.
The “Final Blow” and McDermott’s Words
The “final blow” that culminated in the divorce filing occurred in June 2023 after a significant fight. Spelling shared that McDermott, who is now sober, expressed his frustration during that night. She said, “He said, ‘Ugh, I’m so sick of this. I have been picking up Tori Spelling’s s**t for 18 years.’ And I f**king lost it.” His comment was the breaking point.
McDermott later posted the announcement of their separation on Instagram, though he deleted it later. In an interview with the Daily Mail in November 2023, McDermott described the fight as a turning point, admitting, “I had burned everything down yet again.”
Afterward, McDermott expressed thoughts of self-harm but ended up reconsidering his choices. Remarking on his decision, he said, “Thank God I did. Thank God I did, because I would’ve ruined so many lives.”
A Complex Family Dynamic
Spelling and McDermott have five children together: Liam, Stella, Hattie, Finn, and Beau. McDermott is also the father of Jack, from a previous relationship. The impact of the divorce will undoubtedly affect their family structure.
Spelling Files for Divorce
Last week, Spelling officially filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their separation. She specified the date of their separation as June 17, 2023, which coincides with the aforementioned fight. In the divorce documentation obtained by ET, Spelling has also requested spousal support and wants McDermott’s ability to receive financial support terminated.
Changing Circumstances
Earlier this month, it seemed that Spelling and McDermott were in a better place, with sources reporting a healthier relationship in co-parenting their kids. However, recent photos of an emotional meet-up between the couple have left doubts about their current status. Romantically, both Spelling and McDermott have moved on, with Spelling reportedly dating Ryan Cramer and McDermott seeing Lily Calo.
Despite the challenging circumstances, it is evident that Tori Spelling’s candid account sheds light on the complexity and emotional struggle behind their decision to file for divorce.
