A year of wars, hundreds of thousands of victims and tragedies. Unfortunately, this is how the year 2023 can be defined on a global scale. Hopes that the war in Ukraine would end in the past 12 months have not been realized, even worse – a new military hotspot has opened – in Israel and the Gaza Strip.
In the end, what was the most important event in the world for the coming year 2023?
Dnes.bg asked its readers in its traditional survey at the end of each year. Exactly 1,970 of our readers took part in the survey.
The expected most important event in the world through the eyes of the Bulgarian reader remained The war in Ukraine – 28% of survey respondents ranked this ongoing event #1 in the past 365 days. In second place with 21% is Hamas’ attack on Israel and military operations in the Gaza Strip and the opening of a new military conflict in the world.
Immediately after the hostilities, another great tragedy unfolded around us – the violent earthquake in Turkey at the beginning of the year, which claimed the lives of over 50,000 people. Bulgarian firefighters also participated in the search for survivors and their removal from the ruins, and Bulgaria was one of the first countries to help neighboring Turkey. This tragic event garnered 20% of the votes in our poll.
Among the other events proposed by the editorial staff of Dnes.bg, it ranks fourth Ukraine’s failed counter-offensive on the battlefield by 9%. Started with high hopes, in the end the counterattack by the Ukrainian forces did not achieve the expected success.
For 8%, the most important topic is the fact that during the year they were noted in the world record temperatures and 2023 was marked as one of the world’s hottest, and perhaps the hottest, year on record.
The rest of the proposed events for #1 in the world get quite a few votes. For 4% of respondents it is the actors’ strike in Hollywoodand for other 3% – the victory of the far right in the Netherlands.
The march of Prigogine to Moscow and his subsequent suspicious death are the #1 event of the year for 2% of those polled, and the coronation of Charles as King of England, an event that took place in May, is the same number.
For only 1% of respondents, the most important event is North Korea’s new satellite and Pyongyang’s rapprochement with Moscow, as well as another tension along the Serbia-Kosovo axis, which threatens the Balkans with a new military conflict.
Finally, sending this difficult year to trials, it remains to wish for peace and more positive emotions in the coming leap year 2024. Because without health and peace, everything else in the world has no positive meaning.
