Top Tips for Preventing Cancer and Cancer Recurrence: Advice from a Clinical Nutrition Specialist

JAKARTA – Cancer is still a scourge in the world of health globally. Not only the prevalence, the death rate from this disease is also still very high.

One of the causes of the emergence of this cancer is an unhealthy lifestyle. This is then exacerbated by the lack of early detection of existing symptoms, therefore, in many cases sufferers only take action after they are at a certain stage.

For this reason, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI), Dr. Wiji Lestari, shared a number of tips for preventing cancer while reducing the risk of cancer recurrence through a healthy lifestyle.

“Prevention includes preventing cancer and preventing cancer recurrence by paying attention to each individual’s nutritional status,” said Dr. Wiji.

Sometimes, cancer patients who have been declared cured pay less attention to their nutritional status. Likewise, healthy people who have not been diagnosed with cancer tend to freely consume any food without paying attention to the risks.

Therefore, he recommends always consuming healthy and nutritionally balanced foods for the sake of body health. He also emphasized to always monitor body weight to keep it normal and avoid the risk of obesity.

“Obesity is a risk for cancer, for example breast cancer, endometrial cancer, esophageal cancer. “If body weight is not monitored, this can increase the risk of certain cancers,” explained Dr. Wiji.

He further reminded us to avoid consuming carcinogenic agents, such as alcohol, salted fish, foods containing aflatoxins, foods with preservatives and high salt, and high-calorie foods.

To prevent the risk of cancer, you should limit consumption of processed meat to a minimum. Also avoid processing red meat at high temperatures because high temperatures can produce dangerous ingredients.

When processing red meat, avoid cooking it over direct heat and for too long. In addition, it is best to throw away burnt parts of food because these parts are carcinogenic.

“Red meat that is preserved or processed with lots of additional ingredients is prohibited for cancer patients who are at risk of malnutrition or who are already experiencing severe malnutrition,” said Dr. Wiji.

Especially for cancer patients or who have had cancer, consume no more than three servings of red meat per week. Apart from that, also limit your consumption of processed meat foods to a minimum to avoid the risk of cancer or complications that accompany cancer.

Finally, he suggested doing regular physical activity and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle is a lifestyle of someone who tends to be lazy about moving or doing physical activity.

“Physical activity must be active so that the body is healthier and avoids the risk of cancer, in addition to maintaining a healthy diet,” concluded Dr. Wiji.
