Top Tips for Driving Economically Amid Rising Petrol Prices

The recommended retail price for a liter of petrol has risen to 2.17 euros. This means that it can really pay off to drive more economically. We asked NU.nl readers and the ANWB how best to do this.

Most of the tips we received from our readers were about moving to Belgium for refueling. Highly recommended if that is an option for you, because it is indeed a lot cheaper there. But NUjij’ers also had other tips for people who do not live near the border.

Look carefully at apps, says reader BOdhwho also advocates a calm driving style:

“I always check the Flitsmeister app for the cheapest A-brand pump in the area and I mainly drive slowly on the road. Riding behind a truck in the slipstream saves enormously. I also get to my destination at 85 kilometers per hour. “

Consulting an app is also the ANWB’s first tip: “We have the Onderweg app, so you can see the lowest price at the pump in your area along with your route,” a spokesperson advises. “That can save up to 30 cents per liter. If you fill up the tank, it really adds up.”

Reader ConcernedThirdParty recommends keeping your distance and anticipating well:

“A tip that many other road users can use: keep your distance from the vehicle in front. That saves a lot of unnecessary braking and traffic jams (due to the chain reaction).”

According to reader Wesley_9268f7fb coasting instead of braking and not driving too fast are not only good for fuel consumption:

“A lot of coasting, don’t drive fast and therefore a maximum of 90 kilometers per hour on the motorway. Use the brakes as little as possible and keep anticipating.”

Remove your roof box when you no longer use it

The ANWB also says that adjusting your driving style can bring many benefits. “Stick to the speed, drive carefully, make sure that you brake in time and make sure that you let the car roll out as much as possible. Also try to avoid having to brake abruptly and keep looking ahead. That is also a much safer.”

And a tip that we didn’t see much in the comments: pay close attention to your tire pressure. “Driving with soft tires ensures higher fuel consumption. With good tire pressure you not only drive more pleasantly, but also more economically,” advises the ANWB. “And during holiday periods: remove your roof box if you no longer use it. These are all extra kilos that you carry with you and that also affects fuel consumption.”

For reader Jos_Manshanden there is another option: buy a car that is not too heavy.

“Buy a light car. Cars are getting bigger every year, while families are getting smaller. Hardly anyone really needs an SUV, but I see a lot of people driving a big car alone.”

Check out all the tips we got in the comments of this article.
