This year there will be a significant increase in electric cars on the second-hand market, NOS reported this morning. How much does such a car cost? How good is that battery? We answer these and three more questions about the price and quality of second-hand electric cars below.
How expensive is a second-hand electric car?
The prices of second-hand electric cars vary widely. Range is decisive, says Auke Hoekstra, electric driving researcher at TU Eindhoven.
“On the one hand, you have cars with a limited range, such as the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe. They cost a few thousand euros, but then you only have a hundred kilometers of range in the winter, for example. This is especially interesting as a second car or if you don’t travel far. don’t have to drive.”
On the other hand, there are the more expensive models, says Hoekstra, such as Teslas and Volvos. “Think of tens of thousands of euros. A lot more expensive, but with a large range. They seem more expensive than petrol cars, but if you are not dependent on an expensive charging station, in most cases – especially if you drive a lot – you will still benefit from the overall picture. come out cheaper.”
Johan Meure, a second-hand car seller in Purmerend, actually sees fewer and fewer price differences. “The biggest prejudice is that the electric car is expensive, but that is only partly true. That is true with a new car, but second-hand that is really no longer the case.”
The used car seller sees prices leveling out considerably: “We already see it happening that for the same model, the petrol variant is only a few hundred euros cheaper than the electric one, or sometimes even priced the same.”
The share of electric second-hand cars is still small:

What tax benefits are there?
There are various benefits for electric drivers, such as no purchase tax (BPM), motor vehicle tax (MRB) and a reduced additional tax for business drivers. In any case, these benefits will still apply this year.
There is a purchase subsidy of 2,000 euros for the second-hand car. The car must then be 100 percent electric, with a range of at least 120 kilometers and an original list price of a maximum of 45,000 euros.
This year there is a pot of almost 30 million euros to be distributed:

What are the best-selling second-hand models?
Last year, that pot was just barely used up: around 4 million euros remained on the shelf. More than 14,000 second-hand electric cars were purchased with money from the subsidy pot, approximately 28 million euros.
“These figures show that the subsidy measure does what it is supposed to do: encouraging affordable and practical electric cars,” says chairman of BOVAG Han ten Broeke. “The list is dominated by electric family cars on the one hand and compact city cars on the other.”

How well does the battery last?
The main question for potential buyers is: how good will the battery last? According to researcher Hoekstra, this was sometimes a gamble with earlier models, but this is no longer the case with newer models. “In most cases today, you lose less than 10 percent of capacity after driving 250,000 to 600,000 miles. That’s much longer than most cars last.”
“Car batteries are pampered a lot more than those of telephones, and therefore deteriorate much less quickly,” says Hoekstra. “Good battery management ensures that the car battery never gets too hot. That was the problem with the first Nissan Leafs, for example, which were air-cooled. But now good cooling, almost always with liquid, is the standard.”
Maarten Steinbuch, professor at Eindhoven University, is amazed every time: “Then you read again about a breakthrough that has doubled the quality of batteries. It happens very quickly. The lifespan goes up, the price goes down.”
Used car seller Meure sees it as puzzling with customers: “What do you use the car for, how many kilometers do you drive, what do you do on your holiday, where can you charge, do you have solar panels, etc. You don’t have those kinds of conversations when purchasing a car? petrol cars.”
He also notices that the battery performance remains good, even after ten years. “More and more companies are specialized in repairing battery cells.” A purchasing tip from Steinbuch: “Compare the battery capacity of a fully charged second-hand electric car with what it was like when the car was new.”

What about charging price differences?
Now that more and more private individuals have a second-hand car, the price differences in charging at public charging stations are becoming increasingly clear. A study by Independer and Eco-Movement shows that prices per kilowatt hour are 2.5 times higher in some municipalities than in others.

But prices can also vary within a municipality – even within two poles in the same street. We explain why in this explainer:
Why is one charging station so much more expensive than another?
