Thanks to the “X” prequel “Pearl” and the Stephen King adaptation “The Boogeyman”, horror fans will get their money’s worth twice this week. We can strongly recommend the Marvel sequel “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”.
Again and again there are weeks in which several exciting restarts come into play in the cinemas, including this Thursday. Ideally, of course, you will be drawn to several films at once (after all, there is nothing like the cinema experience). If this is not possible for you in terms of time or for other reasons, we will provide you the three biggest reboots from today June 1st, 2023 below to make your decision a little easier…
Multiversums-Wahnsinn “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”
Our favorite reboot of the week is definitely the long-awaited Marvel animated adventure, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The Oscar-winning predecessor blew our minds in 2018 with its impressive style, bombastic action and a playful multiverse story full of wit and heart. And the sequel even (at least) goes a step further.
When Miles Morales (voice in the original: Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) are once again entangled in the tangles of the insane multiverse, whose stability is threatened more than ever, an even bigger and more creative firework of various spider people and Easter ensues -Eggs without compromising the story, which is as captivating as it is gripping. For what we consider to be the best multiverse film so far, next to “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, we give our review a well-deserved 4.5 out of 5 stars (which also makes it one of the best Marvel films ever).
Horror-Highlight “Pearl”
With “X”, director Ti West (“The Sacrament”, “The Innkeepers”) presented one of THE horror highlights of the year in 2022, for the release of which he made a surprising announcement at the time: at that point in time he had secretly already shot a prequel called “Pearl”, which is finally starting in German cinemas with some delay – and the “X” is in no way inferior.
In his origin story about the eponymous killer (Mia Goth), known from “X”, whose unsuccessful attempts to rise to film stardom in the post-World War I period ultimately drive her to cruel deeds, Ti West does not simply deliver only more of the same, but a stylistically completely different genre pearl.
In the conclusion of our 4-star review, we describe “Pearl”, which is once again quite rightly only released from the age of 18, as “a visually stunning, highly entertaining horror grotesque about the bursting of the American Dream with a grandiose performance of Mia Goth in the leading role”. And if you still can’t get enough of the still young “X” franchise after “Pearl”, you can look forward to the sequel “MaXXXine”, which has not yet been released in cinemas.
Really too scary? “The Boogeyman”
On the other hand, we cannot recommend the second horror start of the week to you so unreservedly. In the run-up to the adaptation of a Stephen King short story, there was quite a bit of hype, as a scene allegedly had to be changed because it was said to be too scary. So, is The Boogeyman really the scariest movie of the year? Unfortunately not, the creeper ultimately loses himself in too many cheap jump scares and an unnecessarily action-packed finale, as our 2.5-star review says.
Until then, the story about a family suffering from the sudden accidental death of the mother, who one day is haunted by a malicious shadowy figure, offers quite chilling horror entertainment and exciting psychological approaches to dealing with grief – which is why inclined genre friends despite the weak second half feel free to take a look.
