Top quality and uniqueness continue to meet strong demand. There were top prizes for Gustav Klimt and Vilhelm Hammershöi. In contemporary art, women were in the majority at Christie’s for the first time.
In retrospect, the development seems all too clear: the full braking of the art business in the Covid times was followed by a boom. This was exemplified last year in New York, when the Macklowe and Paul G. Allen collections were auctioned off and the latter made history with a record sale of $1.5 billion. However, it is now becoming apparent that this event marked the brilliant end of a cycle – possibly even an era.
