Today is Monday July 24 and these are the main news of the day:
1.- The director of the Miami-Dade police, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramírez, was admitted to a Tampa hospital in critical condition, apparently due to a shot. Official sources said Tampa police had confronted Ramirez after an altercation. Ramírez was attending a conference of police chiefs in that city, but later he would have stopped somewhere on the highway between Tampa and Miami. The investigation is still open.
2.- We are now going to the southwest of Miami-Dade, to the scene of a violent confrontation with a firearm. It all started as a dispute between two men, but the situation quickly escalated to shooting, inside a store. This Sunday, at the scene, officers were questioning witnesses while patrols surrounded the entrances to the apartment unit where the suspect hid and was captured minutes later.
3.- The man accused of stealing exotic birds in southwest Miami-Dade appeared in court. Lázaro Mantillaur arrived at the hearing on crutches and heard the 10 charges for the alleged robberies in recent weeks. Police say there were 14 animals in total, while Mantillaur asked to be released on bail because he said his wife is 8 months pregnant and suffers from high blood pressure. The judge set bail for him at $63,500.
4.- Today, Monday, July 24, the tax-free season returns to buy the necessary items for back to school. Until Sunday, August 6, taxes will not be paid on clothing, footwear and certain accessories that sell for $100 or less. Nor for school supplies that cost $50 or less, such as folders, calculators, pencils, pens, among others. Taxes will also not be paid on the first $1,500 of the sales price of the computers.
5.- In a series of tweets, Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, said that “soon we will say goodbye to all the birds.” The little blue bird will be replaced by an “X” logo. Since Musk bought the company in October last year, he has changed the business name to “X Corp.” Last week, a lawsuit was filed claiming the company owes at least $500 million in severance pay to former employees.
