Top NATO Defense Spenders in 2023: Poland, US, Greece, and More – Infographic Included

Poland, the US and Greece are the top NATO defense spenders in 2023. Only 8 other countries have allocated 2% or more to military spending. Where is Bulgaria in these statistics and who gives the least? Check out our infographic.

In 2023, 11 NATO member countries have met the generally agreed defense spending target of 2% of GDP. Poland is in first place – with 3.9%. In 2014, it spent only 1.88% of its GDP on defense.

In second place is the United States, with 3.49%, which is a slight decrease compared to its spending in 2014, when it was 3.72%. 3 more countries from the Alliance have reduced their spending in the period 2014 – 2023: these are Great Britain (from 2.14% to 2.07%), Croatia (from 1.82% to 1.79%) and Turkey (from 1, 45% to 1.31%). In third place in defense spending in NATO is Greece, which allocated 3.01% in 2023.

How much does Bulgaria give?

The other countries meeting the 2% target are: Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Great Britain and Slovakia.

In 2023, the remaining NATO members have not achieved the goal. Among them is Bulgaria, which last year allocated 1.84% of its GDP to defense – in 2014 it was 1.31%.

Which countries spend the least on military spending in NATO?

And Germany again failed to achieve the goal – in 2023, military spending was only about 1.57% of GDP.

Next in line for military spending in NATO in 2023 are Luxembourg, Belgium and Spain. They allocated only 0.72%, 1.13% and 1.26% respectively. The following countries also failed to meet the agreed target: Turkey, Slovenia, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, France, Croatia.
