A top election official in Myanmar has been assassinated by guerrillas opposed to military rule. Sai Kyaw Thu of the military-appointed Union Election Commission was shot multiple times in his car in Yangon, according to reports from the military’s information office and media. Authorities have attributed the attack to the People’s Defense Force, the armed wing of the pro-democracy National Unity Government. Meanwhile, Indian police have arrested a Sikh separatist leader who advocates for an independent homeland and the secession of India’s northern Punjab state. Amritpal Singh was captured in Moga after evading authorities since last month.
