Top Most Unreliable Used Cars for Family Use Ranked by Whatcar.com and MotorEasy

British publication Whatcar.com, in collaboration with insurance company MotorEasy, has published a list of the most unreliable used cars for family use. The top three of this rating included the Audi A3 hatchback, Volkswagen Golf and the Skoda Octavia liftback.

According to a survey conducted by the company, 59% of Audi A3 owners encountered various breakdowns. They complained about malfunctions in the navigation and multimedia systems, problems with the gearbox, electrical and bodywork. However, owners most often reached service centers on their own.

Approximately 70% of car owners noted a long repair time, which was about a week. However, it is worth noting that all troubleshooting work was carried out free of charge as part of warranty service.

Second place in the ranking was taken by the Volkswagen Golf, which received negative ratings from 48% of respondents. In more than a third of cases, owners had to call a tow truck to deliver the car to a service center.

The duration of repairs in half of the cases exceeded a week.

Free repairs were provided to only 89% of Volkswagen Golf owners. Other car owners faced an average bill of more than 175 thousand rubles (or 1,500 pounds sterling).

The third place on the list was Skoda Octavia. Almost half of respondents (49%) reported various problems, such as problems with the body, air conditioning, electrical and infotainment systems.

In some cases, owners had to use a tow truck to transport the car to a service center. All repairs were carried out free of charge.

The following models were also included in the anti-rating:

  • Mercedes A-Class with diesel engine (2018 and newer);
  • Seat Leon (2020 and newer);
  • Mercedes A-Class with petrol engine (2018 and newer);
  • Opel Astra (produced from 2015 to 2022);
  • Skoda Scala (2019 and newer);
  • Mercedes A-Class in hybrid version (2018 and newer);
  • Kia XCeed (2019 and newer).
