The strong wind on the mountain has been an obstacle for the fire brigade in recent days, but the weather conditions are now looking more favorable. “The weather is calmer now and there is no hard shell to spread the fire,” said a representative from the College of African Wildlife Management who is helping extinguish.
The fire started in one of the resting places for climbers. The highest freestanding mountain in the world is a popular destination and attracts some 50,000 climbers every year. Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa and is located at 5895 meters above sea level. The firefighters hope to get the fire under control on Tuesday evening.
Hundreds of students and residents supported the firefighters on Monday. As far as is known there were no injuries.
