Natural and recycled materials and things that last forever, the presence of natural colors and houseplants, treasures found in attics and thrift stores to give a second life – we have experienced all this this year and will continue to observe it in 2024. “Bonava Latvija” experts have compiled the main trends in interior design fashion that will enter our everyday life next year.
1. Philosophy. Still a sustainable design
In the relentless efforts to save the future of the planet and reduce our footprint on the environment and the amount of waste created, the dominance of recycled and natural materials will continue in 2024 at every step – in textiles, wallpapers, lamps, furniture and accessories. Recycling and recycled materials will continue to be the law of every self-respecting interior gourmet. The real interior treasures can still be found in barns, attics, second-hand shops, flea markets, antique shops and manufacturers who use recycled materials.
Aluminum will still be relevant – a light but strong metal that can be endlessly recycled. However, a new trend is the return of the pine tree. 2. Style. Japandi and muted luxury
Japandi is a mix of Japanese and Scandinavian style that has rapidly entered interior design – and, it seems, is here to stay. Both styles have a lot in common – clean lines, minimalism, simplicity, natural materials. Japandi is a calm, cozy and sustainable design, where there is a place for neutral colors, brown and green tones, quality and natural materials – wood, stone, paper and linen, natural and plant accents, natural light, wide, free, uncrowded spaces and such accessories such as books, ceramic teapots, ceramic or stone vases.
To some extent, this style resonates with muted luxury, which will grow in importance in other styles as well: high-quality materials, craftsmanship, objects with personality, not necessarily minimalism, but calm, sustainable and almost timeless interiors. In other words, less is better, but more expensive; not a whim, but a long-term solution to leave a legacy for future generations.
3. Forms. Curved lines are still in fashion
Home is a comfort zone and an island of security, the importance of which increases especially in anxious times. Therefore, for a couple of years now, world designers have been abandoning sharp corners, angles and strict lines, instead preferring curved, wavy lines that resemble water, symbolizing the world of emotions, the mother’s womb, peace, relaxation and life, giving a feeling of emotional refuge. Even in 2024, furniture with curved lines and rounded corners will still be in fashion.
4. Ornaments. Stripes and checkerboard
However, the wavy lines leave the furniture fabric, accessories and wallpaper patterns. Next year will be a victory march of stripes. Stripes are a great way to add a unique accent to a piece of furniture or a room by combining different colors or by infusing stripes among other ornaments, such as placing some striped ones between floral sofa cushions. A striped pattern doesn’t have to be contrasting, it also looks great with muted color tones, just to add a bit of character to the room.

5. Colors. Cool tones recede, warm tones come to the fore
This year’s dominant earth tones will not disappear anywhere in 2024, but they will become brighter and warmer. Of the neutral shades, the main ones will be pastel pink, greenish, light blue and soft yellow – for creating a comfortable atmosphere. After years of the dominance of cooler tones, next year will bring warmer colors and bold color accents. One unexpected, surprising interior item, such as an interesting chair or carpet, is enough to give a room a unique character. Different shades of blue are expected to play a special role.
6. Accents. Conspicuous accessories
The year 2024 could be described as an era of impressive furniture and gorgeous glass products. The eyes of the world will be focused on Murano glass – handmade glassware, lamps and interior items from the island of Murano in Venice. In the second half of the 20th century, these fine, multi-colored glass products lost popularity, but now they are coming back into fashion. Along with them, any other colorful, original glass products will also shine in the spotlight.
