- With “Top Gun: Maverick” Tom Cruise wants to tie in with the good old days of the 80s blockbuster cinema.
- There isn’t a game for the film directly – but almost.
- From May 25th, the Microsoft Flight Simulator will offer a cinema-ready free DLC for the film event. World Update 9 is also coming soon.
“Top Gun: Maverick” should not only make the feeling of controlling a fighter jet tangible on the cinema screen, but also as an interactive gaming experience in “Microsoft Flight Simulator”. The free DLC that turns players into fighter pilots will be available on May 25, according to the official Xbox Twitter account. This means that flight simulator players can climb into the cockpit two days before Tom Cruise, because the cinema release will not follow until May 27th.
Little is known about the scope and content of the free content. Among other things, you should be able to steer an F/A-18 Super Hornet through the sea of clouds. The short GIF in the tweet shows a fighter jet taking off from an aircraft carrier. So one can hope that this type of runway can also be experienced in the DLC. The fighter jet experience will be released for PC with Windows 10, Steam, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass.
Half a year delay due to Corona
The corona pandemic has slowed down life in all areas. That also applied to the cinemas. Accordingly, both “Top Gun: Maverick” and the fighter jet download for “Microsoft Flight Simulator” appear with a delay of almost half a year. Because the theatrical release and the accompanying gaming experience were originally planned for the end of 2021. Responsible is the French developer Asobo Studio, who has already made a name for himself with video game adaptations of Pixar films such as “Ratatouille”, “WALL-E”, “Oben” and “Toy Story 3”.
Microsoft released World Update 9 before the “Top Gun” DLC. Among other things, it should offer more details regarding the presentation of Italy and Malta, including hand-made airports and sights that can also be seen from the air.
