A top general of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Syria. According to Iranian media, Razi Mousavi was one of the country’s most experienced military advisors.

The commander was killed “during an attack by the Zionist regime” near the Syrian capital Damascus, Iran’s state news agency reports IRNA.

In response, the IRGC announces that it will take revenge on Israel: “The Zionist regime will certainly pay for the martyrdom of our long-time military advisor.” The Israeli military declined to comment.

Syria and Iran are considered archenemies of Israel. Mousavi is said to have coordinated military cooperation between the two countries. Iranian state television interrupted its regular news broadcast for a special report on the general’s death.

Israel regularly attacks targets in Syria to prevent Iran from expanding its military influence there. Together with Russia, Iran is the Syrian government’s most important ally.

For the regime in Iran, Syria is part of the so-called axis of resistance in the fight against Israel, alongside the Shia organization Hezbollah in Lebanon. But Iran always claims that the IRGC is only active in Syria as a military advisor and is not directly involved in the civil war there.
