REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Unknowingly, some sufferers diabetes in daily life still consume food or drink that can increase blood sugar levels. The reason is, there are certain foods that have hidden sugar content.
In fact, people with type 2 diabetes are advised to eat foods that keep their blood sugar levels low. Type two diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin (a glucose-breaking hormone).
If it continues to accumulate, high blood sugar levels can eventually cause damage to organs in the body, and can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. That’s why it’s so important for people with diabetes to pay close attention to what they eat.
There are several foods that are known to the public as healthy intake, but instead have a negative impact on blood sugar. Foods that can increase blood sugar significantly include grapes, ramen, potatoes, sushi, dried fruit, fruit juices and cereals.
Quoted from the Daily Record page, Tuesday (8/8/2023), the Diabetes.co.uk community in England explained further about the foods that need to be avoided. Grapes are generally healthy, but eating too many of them can increase your blood sugar level.
“Despite the properties of grapes that help lower blood glucose levels, one grape contains about one gram of carbohydrates. Therefore, people with diabetes should limit their consumption of grapes, especially if they are prone to high blood sugar levels,” said Diabetes.co.uk.
Another example, a serving of about one tablespoon of dried fruit can contain as much as 20 grams of sugar, so it needs to be limited. Instead, it is recommended to eat foods that can stabilize blood sugar levels. Some of them are seafood, broccoli, beans, cabbage, berries, oranges, avocados, whole grains, yogurt, and eggs.
It’s also important to avoid foods that rank high on the glycemic index (GI). The British Dietetic Association (BDA) explains, every time someone consumes sugary or starchy foods or drinks, blood glucose levels in the body will increase.
Some of the foods with a high glycemic index tend to be digested quickly and cause a rapid and sharp rise in blood glucose levels. “Low GI foods and drinks, which are digested more slowly, will make your blood glucose rise more slowly. These are sometimes called ‘slow-release’ carbohydrates,” says the BDA.
