“Type 2 diabetes is largely caused by diet and lifestyle factors,” says Lynch.

Although high blood sugar is a symptom of this disease, the cause of insulin resistance is due to the accumulation of fat in the liver and muscle cells. This buildup occurs because the diet consumes a lot of animal foods and processed foods.

“Both increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes because they are high in fat, energy dense (high in calories), and very low in fiber,” he said.
