Arsenal London was the first club in England to announce an agreement with players in the wage discussion this week. By March 2021, the professionals of the “Gunners” will forego 12.5 percent of their salary. This includes granite Xhaka – Mesut Özil refuses.
As “Mirror” reports, Mesut Özil earns over 420,000 francs a week at Arsenal. That is far more than all of his team-mates. Nevertheless, the former German international refuses to cut wages during the Corona crisis. He is one of three Gunners players who declined a 12.5 percent cut by March 2021.
Özil is said to be ready to earn less in these difficult times – but he wants to wait and see how much the corona crisis actually hurts the football business. “We will see what the exact financial consequences will be for the clubs in about three to six months. But we don’t see that yet, »says Özil’s advisor Dr. Explore Sogut.
After the decision, the 31-year-old had to listen to a lot of criticism in England. Arsenal fan, author and TV personality Piers Morgan rated the action as “scandalous”. Granit Xhaka is said to have agreed to the cut in the same amount. The Swiss earns around 120,000 francs a week from the “Gunners”. 12.5 percent corresponds to CHF 15,000.
If Arsenal qualifies for the Champions League next season, those in charge want to pay their players any wage cuts back. In the case of a Europa League qualification, the players get half back.
