Top Critics Rave about HBO Series Starring Robert Downey Jr.: The Sympathizer Miniseries Review

In 2015, Viet Thanh Nguyen released the book The Sympathizer out. A year later, the book had already won 7 prizes, including a Pulitzer Prize for the Fiction category. This is where the success stopped The Sympathizer however not.

The miniseries

A24 and Rhombus Media co-produced the miniseries. The Sympathizer follows a North Vietnamese spy who has infiltrated the South Vietnamese army. After the war in Vietnam he is forced to flee to the United States.

While reporting, he must try to keep his identity secret. All this while he struggles with his new life. The miniseries is rewarded with an impressive score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reviews

According to top critic Craig Mathieson of The Age (Australia). The Sympathizer intended to “to enjoy slowly”. Nandini Balial of Robert Ebert.com agrees with Mathieson. Moreover, both feel that the first three episodes of “rarely good level” are.
