The United States maintained its leadership in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy during the past year (2022), despite the decline in its production in conjunction with the decline in nuclear generation globally.
The total world production of electricity generated by nuclear reactors declined over the past year by 4.4% on an annual basis, affected by the decline in the United States, France, Ukraine and Japan, according to annual data issued by Energy Institute British.
Ukraine recorded the highest annual decline rate in the world, which is due to the Russian invasion of its lands and the country’s nuclear power plants were damaged as a result of the war, especially the Zaporizhia plant, which fell under Moscow’s control with the outbreak of the conflict.
In the following lines, the Energy Research Unit reviews the list of countries that generated the most electricity from nuclear energy during the past year, amid a decline in many countries.
Generation of electricity through nuclear energy worldwide
Data from the Energy Institute shows that the global production of electricity through nuclear reactors, over the past year, declined to 2,679 terawatt-hours, compared to 2,802 terawatt-hours in 2021.
The decline was led by North America, whose total production of electricity generated from nuclear energy declined to 909.6 terawatt-hours in 2022, compared to 924.6 terawatt-hours in 2021, an annual decline of 1.6%.
The total production of European countries, led by Ukraine, also declined from electricity generated through nuclear energy during the past year to 741.5 terawatt-hours, compared to 882.3 terawatt-hours in 2021, a drop of 16%.

The South and Central America region also recorded a decline in electricity production from nuclear reactors during the past year, achieving a total of 22 terawatt-hours in 2022, compared to 24.9 terawatt-hours in 2021, an annual decline of 11.4%.
Africa’s production declined over the past year to 10.1 terawatt-hours, compared to 12.4 terawatt-hours in 2021, due to the decline in production of South Africa, the only country on the continent that relies on nuclear energy for electricity production.
In contrast, the production of the Asia-Pacific region – led by China – from electricity generated through nuclear energy increased to 737.9 terawatt-hours last year, compared to 714.1 terawatt-hours in 2021, an annual increase of 3.3%.
The countries of the former Soviet Union recorded a growth in the production of electricity from nuclear reactors, with a total of 231.2 terawatt-hours, compared to 230.2 terawatt-hours in 2021, an increase of 0.5%.
Under the leadership of the UAE, the production of electricity generated through nuclear energy in the Middle East region increased during the past year to 26.7 terawatt-hours, compared to 14.1 terawatt-hours in 2021, achieving an annual growth rate of 89.4%.
5 largest countries in the world
The United States topped the list of countries generating the most electricity from nuclear energy during the past year, with a volume of 812.1 terawatt-hours, compared to 820.7 terawatt-hours in 2021, recording an annual decline of 1%.
In the second place, China came with a volume of electricity production through nuclear energy that amounted to 417.8 terawatt-hours in 2022, compared to 407.5 terawatt-hours in 2021, achieving an annual growth rate of 2.5%.
And in the third place in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy, France came with a production volume of 294.7 TWh, compared to 379.4 TWh in 2021, down by 22.3%.
Russia came in fourth place with a production volume of electricity generated through nuclear energy, amounting to 223.7 TWh, compared to 222.4 TWh in 2021, with a slight decrease of 0.6%.
South Korea ranked fifth in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy, with a volume that rose to 176.1 TWh, compared to 158 TWh in 2021, recording a growth of 11.4%.
Significant decline in Ukraine and Japan
Canada recorded a 5.8% decline in generation through nuclear reactors over the past year, to reach 86.6 terawatt-hours, compared to 92 terawatt-hours in 2021, making it the sixth largest country in the list of countries generating electricity from nuclear energy.
Ukraine ranked seventh in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy last year, with a decline in its production by 28%, bringing the total to 62.1 TWh, compared to 86.2 TWh in 2021.

While electricity generation through nuclear energy in Spain increased last year to 58.6 terawatt-hours, compared to 56.6 terawatt-hours in 2021, ranking eighth on the list.
With a decline of 15.4%, Japan ranked ninth in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy, achieving 51.8 TWh, compared to 61.2 TWh in 2021.
And in the last place in the list of countries that generate the most electricity from nuclear energy, Sweden ranked with a production volume of 51.5 TWh, compared to 53 TWh in 2021.
