Why do people choose a crossover? It’s, simply put, a matter of height. The corosover sits higher above the road, the driver has a higher seating position, and the interior usually has a higher roof. The practical benefits of this are quite real: it’s easier to climb curbs for parking, it’s more agile to drive along country roads on picnics and you have a better view from behind the wheel, which is important, for example, on bad roads.
As for bad roads, the crossover feels more confident on them thanks to the wheels, which are usually larger than those of a classic passenger car. And even with all-wheel drive, everything is fine in this segment – most of the cars in our selection have 4×4 mode.
Nissan Juke, 2010–2019
A car with an expressive, albeit somewhat unusual appearance. All engines are full-displacement (from 1.5 to 1.6 liters), naturally aspirated and turbocharged (109-188 hp), and there is one diesel engine. The transmission is either manual or automatic, and in the latter case it will be a not very durable CVT, due to critical wear and tear of which its first owners often get rid of the Juke. With the most powerful engine, the Juke has a 4×4 drive, but the ground clearance of 18 cm does not allow this model to get into real mud or severe snowdrifts. On uneven roads, this car is perceived as tough, because the chassis is “tailored” for smooth asphalt. By the way, even the all-wheel drive system is tuned for high-speed driving: it has a differential that helps you deftly take sharp turns.
Hyundai Kona, 2017–2023 гг.
The least known compact “cross” in our country, this little “Korean” is probably more oriented towards highways and urban use than others – compared to most competitors, it has a squat silhouette, it is low and sportily wide. The range of engines includes only supercharged units, including a 1.0-liter downsizing and full-size 1.6-liter engines (120–174 hp), including a diesel one. The automatic transmission is an almost sporty “robot” with two clutches. It is gratifying that the Kona was produced in a full rein version. The first generation Kona also has a purely electric version, but we are not talking about such cars today
Suzuki Jimny, 1998–2018 гг.
A car that is completely atypical for the compact crossover segment, and strictly speaking, it is not a crossover, but a full-fledged 4×4 SUV – without any exaggeration. It has a frame design, continuous axles, all-wheel drive with a two-stage transfer case and a rigid front end connection – in a word, everything is like the few adult “rogues” now.
Under the hood of the Jimny is a 1.3 liter or 1.4 liter petrol engine (80 – 82 hp), or a 1.5 liter turbodiesel (65 – 86 hp). Let us repeat that, despite its toy dimensions (length 3.675 m), this car is a real off-road conqueror, but in Ukraine most of them were used not on off-road, but as an urban crossover; in particular, it was often bought for women. A significant minus is the microscopic trunk (85 l), which, however, increases by folding the rear seat (620 l).
Ford EcoSport, 2012-2022
A somewhat atypical model for Europe, which, nevertheless, leaves a positive impression. It has an interesting set of engines: a pair of 1.5-liter diesel engines and a set of gasoline engines with a displacement of 1.0 to 2.0 liters (100 – 140 hp). Moreover, the youngest “turboliter” is the same outstanding 3-cylinder turbo unit, which for several years in a row received the title of best engine of the year in Europe. “Automatic machines”, both classic hydromechanical and fashionable preselective ones with two clutches, “mechanics” also come across. In addition, there are many cars with all-wheel drive on the secondary market. The car is comfortable while driving, including on rough roads, and in trim levels with top-end engines it is also quite playful.
Renault Captur, 2013 – 2019
A very stylish European car (not to be confused with the Capture of the same name based on the Duster, created for poor countries), pleasant to drive. But its spectacular appearance is not its only advantage; for example, the clear clearance of 20 cm, a record for this company, does not hinder the bright perception. The sliding rear sofa allows you to increase the trunk; there are some other transformation tricks. The engine range is quite rich, it includes downsized 0.9-liter 3-cylinder engines, and more respectable 1.2- and 1.3-liter units, as well as an adult 1.5-liter diesel engine (90 – 110 hp .). All engines and motors are turbocharged, which is not very good for a used car. At the same time, the model has low fuel consumption. The cars, which were once officially sold in Ukraine, were equipped with an automatic transmission with an effective preselective “robot” with two clutches. There are no 4×4 versions; all Captures are with front-wheel drive.

When choosing a compact crossover on the secondary market, pay attention not only to the consumer qualities of the model, but also to the technical condition of the car. First of all, considering that such cars are rarely designed with a large margin of safety and service life. Accordingly, if such a car was used with excessive load – for example, in SUV mode – then during the first period of ownership you will have to repair it often. Therefore, before purchasing, it is advisable to find out who the first owner of the crossover was and how he used this car.
