After the past year 2023 was officially recognized as the hottest in the world from the time in which temperature measurement or the so-called pre-industrial age, expectations for the current year 2024 are to achieve new records.
This forecast was made by climatologist Simeon Matev, who is also a professor at Sofia University. He explained to journalists what to expect in the coming months.
The El Niño phenomenon will most likely continue until mid-2024, but its impact will be felt for several months after that. The predicted average global temperature for 2024 is 1.34 – 1.58 degrees Celsius above the average for the pre-industrial period, which shows that we can witness new temperature records in the new year as well,” commented Matev. According to him, the current year is expected to be the eleventh year in a row with temperatures of at least 1 degree above pre-industrial levels.
According to him, the expectations are that the extreme phenomena and events will be even more numerous and with a greater territorial scope.
Matev noted that human influence is a major contributor to the temperature records that are due to climate change.
Extreme events are becoming more intense and more frequent, and human casualties and economic damage are increasing, he added.
