Top Christmas Destinations in Europe: Riga, Denmark, and Dublin – Celebrate the Holidays with Latvian Communities

In the study conducted by the British company “Post Office Travel Money”, which summarizes the 12 most profitable tourist destinations in Europe for Christmas, Riga is ranked 1st, where the traditional Christmas market will open its gates on the Dom square on the weekend. But the Christmas atmosphere will be conjured not only in Old Riga. The Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Toronto congregation, the Free Latvian Society in Philadelphia, the Latvian Society of Northern California and the Latvian Society of Oregon, as well as the Latvian Center in Minster, invite you to enjoy gingerbread and Latvian food, buy handicrafts, meet Santa Claus, play together and listen to Christmas carols. The Latvian Association of Sweden, the Daugava Hawks Foundation in Great Britain, the Manchester Latvian Society and the Bradford Latvian Club, as well as the Norwegian Latvian Choir “Laipa” and the Latvian-Finnish Mixed Choir “Ziemeļmeita”.

Perhaps the most tempting gingerbread smells and the most delicious tastes are in Denmark, Jutland, where the Latvian weekend school “Mazputniņš” organizes a traditional, well-received gingerbread workshop. Mothers of small bakers should take care of the necessary attributes – an apron, a rolling pin, gingerbread molds and a gnome hat for collecting hair and wiping sweat. But after hard work, a couple of weeks later everyone will be delighted with the “Christmas Journey” puppet show and a wintry party with Santa Claus. Small birds flock to Jutland schools from all around – even from Kerteminde, which is 98 km away, but from Esbjerg it is 85 km and Odense is 75 km long. In “Latvians in the world” we will learn about the upcoming events of “Mazputniņa” from the teacher Sandras Kaktinas. By the way, on the recent birthday of Latvia, Sandra together with Marek Melecs surprised all Latvians in Denmark with a wonderful gift – the documentary short film “Together with Myself”. It is a story about the persistent work and enthusiasm of diaspora collectives, going towards the common goal – the Festival of Songs. With the help of the film, the creators wanted to popularize the movement of amateur groups in the diaspora and motivate others to participate, don’t be afraid and try, because everything is possible with your friends!

Musical moods will reign over the weekend in Dublin as well. Choir “eLVé” of the Latvian Society in Ireland and chairwoman of the Latvian Society in Ireland Inguna Grietiņa-Dārziņa we invite you to ring in the holidays with a special event, because for the first time in Ireland, the “Gathering of Singing Families in the Christmas Spirit” is being held. Everyone was invited to contribute their musical performance to the concert, and the response was great – 16 families will also perform alongside the “eLVé” choir.
