British-Iranian top politician Alireza Akbari has been executed in Iran. This is reported by the government press agency Libra.
The former defense minister of Iran was sentenced to death on Wednesday for spying for the United Kingdom. Akbari allegedly leaked state secrets to the British secret service MI6.
According to Iran, he also played a role in the assassination of an important scientist in 2020 who worked on the Iranian nuclear program.
Akbari lived in the UK for a long time and had both Iranian and British nationality. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warned Iran not to carry out the execution on Friday. He said the verdict was politically motivated and he called on Iran to release Akbari.
