Top Astronomical Phenomena to Observe in March 2024: New Moon, Full Moon, March Equinox, and More!

Jakarta

Every month there are always astronomical phenomena that occur and are interesting to observe. What are the astronomical phenomena in March 2024?

Researcher at the Space Research Center of the Aeronautics and Space Research Organization (ORPA) of the National Research and Innovation Agency, Farahhati Mumlahana, during the 103rd edition of live BRIEF (BRIN Insight Every Friday), Friday (5/1), explained in detail the astronomical phenomena that occurred during the year 2024.

Especially in March, there is a New Moon phase on March 10 and a Full Moon on March 25. Then on March 20, there is the March Equinox phenomenon, namely when the Sun shines directly on the equator, and the amount of day and night is almost the same throughout the world. Then the planet Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation on March 24.

“To observe these phenomena, it is also necessary to pay attention to the presentation of the Moon’s illumination in relation to the phases of the Moon. The new Moon is better for observing, compared to the full Moon because the light is too bright, beating out other celestial objects,” said BRIN’s First Expert Researcher, quoted from BRIN website.

In fact, there was a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse phenomenon on March 24-25, at the same time as Muslims around the world were fasting during the month of Ramadan. Unfortunately, this eclipse did not come to Indonesia.

The Penumbral Lunar Eclipse March 24-25 will only cross Europe, North/East Asia, Australia, Africa, North America, South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic and Antarctica.

“There is also an eclipse phenomenon in 2024, but unfortunately it will not cross Indonesian territory. However, it can be taken into consideration if you want to plan a tour or expedition to chase the eclipse,” said Farah.

After the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on March 24-25, next there will be a Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, a Partial Lunar Eclipse on September 17-18, and an Annular Solar Eclipse on October 2.
