Americans are mostly satisfied with six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines, but they can also appreciate many four-cylinder engines.
While overseas, the automaker still offers a number of models with six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines, in Europe we’ve recently been grateful for four-cylinders as well. After all, they don’t have it easy – they increasingly have to compete with small-volume three-cylinder engines that promise lower weight and higher economy. Not to mention the advent of electric cars.
Among the four-cylinder engines, you will find a number of really impressive pieces that, thanks to their well-thought-out design, high-quality components and robust construction, stand out from the rest for their reliability. Each of us probably has our favorite, but which four-cylinder do they consider to be the most reliable in the US? This shows a selection of overseas Hot Cars colleagues.
They included, for example, an engine in their selection of ten pieces Nissan SR20DET, who regularly managed to beat more powerful opponents. It comfortably tolerated tuning up to 300 horsepower, but with minor modifications it easily reached over 400. At the same time, it left the factory with a power of slightly over 200 horsepower.
As the only boxer engine, the unit was selected Subaru EJ20. The two-liter engine, introduced in 1989, also appeared in the WRX STi model. Working on the engine is not easy, but with proper maintenance it should last a long time. A number of engines were also included in the selection Honda B Seriesespecially the sixteenth B16 it is highly appreciated for its high performance and reliability. However, the engines also perform well B18 a B20.
Perhaps an unexpected surprise in the selection is the engine Saab B234R, a 2.3-liter turbocharged 225-horsepower four-cylinder, introduced in 1993. In its day, the engine was appreciated for its impressive performance, but surprisingly, it also lacks solid durability and reliability. That is, with proper maintenance, as usual.
The 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine also earned attention Volvo Redblock B230FT, which was installed, for example, in the Volvo 240 model. Like the brand’s cars from the eighties, this engine also earned numerous praises for its robustness and durability. In addition, it was easy to modify, thanks to which it offered up to 200 horsepower.
The fifth place went to the BMW brand, which became famous above all for its breathtaking inline six-cylinder engines. However, the automaker surprisingly chose a four-cylinder for the iconic BMW M3 of the E30 generation S14, which, however, dazzled everyone with its performance, zest for life, sound and durability. But for a car/engine originally designed for racing, it shouldn’t surprise us that much.
The fourth place went to the brand again Honda, this time to F20/F22 engines. Just the engine F20C at the same time he powered the S2000 roadster, which became an iconic affair thanks to him. It had a great sound, revved to 8,800 rpm, and with 250 horsepower, it became the most powerful mass-produced engine per liter of volume. In addition, it should also be amazingly reliable.
The engine took third place VW 1.9 TDI, which is the only diesel unit in the selection. The engine is also well-known in the Czech Republic for its impressive endurance, but at the time of its launch it also surprised with its willingness to rev, decent performance and great pull, not to mention low consumption.
The American colleagues placed the engine on the second rung Toyota 4A-GE, which appeared, for example, under the hood of the iconic Toyota Corolla AE86. Under the hood of this car, the engine became famous for its performance, reliability and intake sound, but it is also worth mentioning that it was the first mass-produced 1.6-liter DOHC engine in Japan, with Yamaha also working on its development. Over the years, various versions of this engine have been created, with some pieces even able to withstand 11,000 revolutions.
The first place was again occupied by the engine of the brand Hondaspecifically series engines K Series. These engines, which replaced the B Series engines, once again raised the bar in both performance and reliability. Ultimate version K24 at the same time, it offers a power of over 200 horsepower and tolerates high runs well. So it’s no wonder that these engines are also a popular choice for people looking for a new power unit to build into their project.
