Jakarta – High blood pressure or hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries increases. This increase in blood pressure causes the heart to have to work extra to pump blood.
Blood pressure involves two measurements, namely the pressure when the heart contracts (systolic) and the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats (diastolic).
To maintain normal blood pressure, people with high blood pressure are strongly advised to pay attention to their food intake. Because, if people with high blood pressure eat carelessly, it will increase the risk of complications.
Some of the impacts that can occur as a result of eating carelessly, for example such as; Increase the risk of heart disease, increase blood cholesterol levels, increase the risk of stroke or heart infarction to increase the risk of heart failure.
Therefore, it is very important for people with high blood pressure to pay attention to their food intake and avoid or limit consumption of foods that can increase the risk of complications.
So, what foods should people with high blood pressure avoid?
1. Salt or sodium
The main foods that need to be “enemies” by people with high blood pressure are salt or sodium. This is because salt can bind fluids, thereby increasing blood volume.
As a result, blood pressure increases. If you have high blood pressure, salt intake needs to be limited, which is a maximum of 1,500 milligrams per day, or the equivalent of 1 teaspoon.
2. Fried foods
Several studies have found that fried foods can be bad for the body, said. One of them is increasing the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and liver failure.
This type of food should be avoided by people with high blood pressure because fried foods are high in saturated fat and trans fat. These two fats are known to increase blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels in the body.
3. Red meat
Red meat can increase a person’s blood pressure. This happens because red meat that is processed in the human body will metabolize and release compounds that trigger blood pressure.
Examples of red meat are beef, lamb and goat. To reduce this risk, choose the smallest pieces of red meat that are not too red.

4. Sweet food and drinks
Foods with extra calories and high in sugar can cause weight gain quickly. Being overweight or obese can trigger high blood pressure.
This is because the accumulation of fat in the body can make the heart work extra to constrict blood vessels so that high blood pressure occurs. Therefore, limit daily sugar consumption, by reducing sweet foods and drinks.
5. Caffeine
Research proves, 200-300 mg of caffeine can increase blood pressure only for 1 hour after consumption. Worse, this condition can last up to 3 hours.
For this reason, people with high blood pressure are recommended to reduce coffee consumption or replace it with products that don’t contain too much caffeine.
6. Packaged food
Finally, people with hypertension need to pay attention to consumption of packaged food, because usually packaged food has a fairly high salt or sodium content. As is the case with soups or sauces in packaging. One can of packaged soup contains up to 900 to 2,000 mg of sodium. So that people with hypertension would be better to eat homemade soup.
Not only that, packaged foods that are sold in frozen conditions should also be avoided. For example, for pizza purchased in frozen packaging, more salt tends to be added so that when it is eaten it has a taste that is not inferior to pizza eaten immediately.
