Despite the fact that Toyota vehicles are synonymous with reliability, some of them can surprise their owners unpleasantly. And especially when purchased in the secondary market with high mileage.
The American edition of SlashGear revealed a list of 5 such machines. When buying them, overseas journalists are advised to be extremely careful, and if possible, even stay away from them.
Corolla (2009)
The Corolla is one of the most reliable and best-selling vehicles in the Toyota lineup and has been in production for nearly 60 years. For such a long time, this model had at least one unsuccessful year – 2009, when the inline 4-cylinder engine of the family had serious problems with increased oil consumption.
In addition, such machines suffered from the failure of water pumps, which led to engine overheating and subsequent costly repairs.
The icing on the cake was several recall campaigns, one of which was associated with a “sticky” gas pedal, and the other with a fire-prone electric window motor.
RAV4 (2019)
Another unexpected participant in this anti-rating marked the beginning of the fifth generation of the company’s popular line of crossovers. The car has been hailed as one of the best RAV4 incarnations ever, though the 2019 car has been plagued by numerous problems.
Specifically, such RAV4s entered the TOP-3 of the most unreliable cars according to the portal “Car Complaints“. The main complaint about them from the owners concerned the strong rocking while driving on the highway. The problem arose at an early stage. Drivers reported it on average after 5 thousand kilometers after purchase.
The second most common defect in the case of this crossover was roof leakage, when water entered the cabin through the clips of the roof rails.
Camry (2007)
Without a twinge of conscience, the Americans included in this list even the legendary Toyota Camry and its sixth generation, which is considered indestructible in Russia. The main claim to the premium sedan lies in the area of excessive oil consumption, which begins to appear on runs over 150 thousand kilometers.
The second and third serious disadvantages of the model, journalists from the United States called annoying engine knocks and deformation of the front panel material.
Avalon (2012-2015)
I entered this anti-TOP and flagship sedan with the only serious problem that was directly related to its safety. We are talking about the PCS collision avoidance system, which worked when the radar confused steel hinges or plates on the roadway with other cars, abruptly stopping the car unnecessarily.
Emergency braking of these vehicles caused accidents with other road users, resulting in a major recall in which only 84% of the vehicles were corrected. The rest still roam the roads and pose a threat to other road users.
Sienna (2007)
Unlike many other Toyota models of those years that suffered from oil burns, the Sienna avoided this problem, but had other, sometimes very strange and safe malfunctions.
In particular, in such cars it was possible to remove the transmission selector from the parking position even without pressing the brake pedal, and the spare wheel assembly was subject to corrosion, which created a risk of detaching the “spare wheel” from it while driving.
