Top 5 Space Sector Achievements in 2023: Gravitational Waves, James Webb Telescope, Asteroid Samples, ISS, and Rocket Launches

SPACE — In 2023, scientists carry out a lot of research in the space field. Science correspondent PBS NewsHour Miles O’Brien in an article wrote that there are at least 5 achievements in the space sector in 2023 that will change history.

Some of the most surprising achievements are how space travel has “grown up”. Here are five top space events in 2023:

The ‘buzz’ of the Universe
The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) has studied pulsars, which are rapidly rotating neutron stars. The pulsar emits radio frequencies that can be used to detect gravitational waves.

Gravitational waves are a type of wave that originates from supermassive black holes. Astronomers with NANOGrav say they can now detect the “noise” of this particular type of gravitational wave. This finding is fundamental to understanding everything about supermassive black holes.

James Webb Space Telescope
“Fundamentally, James Webb is rewriting the astronomy textbooks right now,” O’Brien said.

The James Webb Telescope was launched into space in late 2021. Its first images shocked the astronomy world two years ago.
So far, the Webb telescope has captured the smallest brown dwarf star ever observed.

“James Webb has done extraordinary things,” O’Brien said.

Many photographs with amazing detail were produced by James Webb. Findings from the James Webb telescope change the way we think about the universe.”

OSIRIS-REx Brings Asteroid Samples to Earth
OSIRIS-REx is the first American effort to explore an asteroid and bring back space rock samples. After the spacecraft delivers asteroid samples to Earth, it remains in space to explore other asteroids.

Scientists are very enthusiastic about asteroid material because it is believed that these objects could be “intermediaries and propagators of life in our universe”.

25 Years of the International Space Station (ISS)
The International Space Station circles Earth every 90 minutes, but will soon be taken out of service. The American Space Agency (NASA) has agreed to operate the station until 2030.

Russia said it hoped to go first before the cooperation period ended. However, the agreement between the two Cold War rivals to conduct joint scientific research in orbit was “an extraordinary achievement.

Some of the top breakthroughs that NASA is bringing to the ISS is a new water filtration system. There are also methods to combat muscle atrophy and bone loss, as well as ways to grow food in microgravity.

Record Number of US Rocket Launches
There were 105 successful rocket launches from the United States in 2023. This is a record year for launching objects into space.
