Before you look closely at a particular model from the point of view of its efficiency, you should understand that the appetite of a vehicle is significantly influenced by its equipment – more precisely, the engine model and type of gearbox. And besides, at least half of the success in saving on fuel is competent control of the machine.
We can say with full responsibility that in the wrong hands, even the most economical car can leave noticeable holes in the budget. It is also true that a car with mediocre passport data and an experienced driver may demonstrate a very modest appetite.
Volkswagen Tiguan I (2007–2015 гг.)
$8 500 – 22 800
A very popular, but actually controversial car. It has a prestigious brand, and not the least of its advantages is its classic, timeless design (our selection will include another model in a similar style, but completely opposite in other respects). The Tiguan’s off-road ambitions have some basis: an all-wheel drive system, an impressive ground clearance of 200 mm, and appropriate body geometry, especially in the “suburban” Track&Field version. On asphalt, the car with most engines feels dynamic and handles well.
True, the most economical configurations are without 4×4 drive, but all-wheel drive is by no means gluttons. A rare case – among the most economical engines in the line of engines is not only the post-restyling 2.0 TDI diesel engine, but also the late petrol 1.4 TSI (which no longer has a compressor); they are almost equal in fuel consumption in mixed mode – 6.3 and 6.5 l/100 km, respectively. Moreover, if the diesel is considered one of the best VW units of that period, then the 1.4-liter TSI, on the contrary, seems to be a concentration of technical problems. And yet, both are massively present on Ukrainian roads and car markets.
Renault Duster (from 2010)
$7 500 – 22 500
The sales leader in the crossover segment generally does not have many drawbacks, the main one of which is the reputation of a budget car with an appropriate appearance. No wonder the French in many markets were shy for a long time to sell it under the Renault brand, limiting themselves to the Dacia sub-brand. But in reality the car is quite comfortable, reliable and unpretentious. It has a wonderful suspension that is not afraid of potholes both on a dusty country road and on asphalt.
The 4×4 versions perform well even on specific off-road conditions. All this can be said about the Dusters of the first two generations (the second – from 2017). The most economical Duster engine is the well-known 1.5 dCi diesel. He may seem weak to some for such a car, but no one will accuse him of wasting the owner’s money. The declared consumption in the combined cycle is 4.6 – 5.3 l/100 km, depending on the configuration and market.
Seat Ateca (since 2016)
$16 500 – 35 100
The Spanish brand traditionally offers its own interpretation of VW models, and Ateka turned out to be more expressive than its German and Czech relatives. It is also important that it is more affordable than the single-platform Tiguan, and from the point of view of our rating, it is important that the “Spaniard” has its own line of engines. We’re most interested in the 1.6-liter 1.6 TDI diesel, because in single-wheel drive configuration it consumes 4.5 l/100 km – at least that’s what the documents say. Another tempting option could be the smallest of the Ateka petrol units, which are promised to consume 5.2 l/100 km. But this is a small 1.0-liter TSI engine with three cylinders and a turbocharger, the durability of which cannot be compared with a diesel engine.
Kia Sportage III (2010–2015 гг.)
$10 300 – 16 500
Once upon a time, Sportage in its third generation was the undisputed leader of the segment on the Ukrainian market. Consumers bought into the courageous and at the same time swift profile, impressive, as if specially widened track, powerful engines and Korean reliability already confirmed by that time. And this car, popular in Ukraine, despite its serious, even monumental appearance, had another unexpected advantage: modest fuel consumption. When equipped with the smallest available diesel engine, the 1.7 CRDi, and a single-wheel drive, the hit of the time could cost only 5.3 l/100 km in highway/city mode. Two generations have passed since this car, but it is still popular on the secondary market.
Peugeot 3008 (2007–2016)
$9 900 – 15 300
In many ways an extraordinary car. An atypical appearance, rich equipment, a passenger-friendly interior – and all this against the backdrop of an uncomfortable chassis and a “robot” gearbox that chronically “pushes” when shifting in lower gears. But many are ready to forgive this car for its successful 1.6 HDi diesel engine. It is reliable and durable, and the official consumption figure in mixed mode is 4.9 l/100 km, and the owners claim that even lower figures can be achieved in reality. At the same time, petrol engines of the first generation Peugeot 3008, on the contrary, are characterized by an increased appetite.
In short
High engine technology, which allows rather bulky crossovers to consume fuel at the same level as city cars, is actually an insidious thing. Today a car saves you money at the gas station, but tomorrow it requires repairs or service costing half a ton of gasoline. Therefore, you should only rely on fuel consumption only when buying a new car. And when choosing a used one, you will also have to take into account the factor of maintenance and possible repairs. Let us remind you that it is the most economical engines – diesels – that are the most expensive to repair.
