Stress drains you and can seriously affect your health. Everyday worries, financial situation, problems at work, are just a few examples of the main sources of stress.
Stress affects your immune system, heart health, sleep and happiness. A healthy diet can help you get through stressful times in your life.
Here are the 5 foods that can help you get rid of stress and anxiety:
Avocado
“Avocados are superfoods in many ways,” he says Rene Ficek, RD. She notes that when it comes to stress relief, avocado tops the list. Avocados provide the antioxidants lutein, beta-carotene and vitamin E – as well as plenty of B vitamins such as folate, low levels of which are linked to depressive states.
Oysters
“Stress can wreak havoc on the immune system,” says Rachel Begun, MS, RDN. “That’s why we’re more likely to get sick when we’re stressed.” She notes that zinc is essential for immune system function, “so getting adequate amounts during times of stress is a good idea.” Rene Ficek, RD, recommends oysters for their zinc, noting that “they’re the perfect food for stress relief.”
Ginger
Nutritionists love ginger because it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory food, according to Rachel Begun, MS, RDN. This is important because “stress causes inflammation throughout the body, and inflammation is a precursor to almost all the chronic conditions we try to avoid, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.”
NUTS
“Most nuts have been shown to be helpful in combating stress,” says Rene Ficek, RD. “And because they’re both crunchy and a little salty, they’re perfect for cravings.” What could be behind this? “Low zinc levels have been linked to both anxiety and depression,” says Ficek, “and walnuts are a healthy source of this needed zinc.”
Black chocolate
Rene Ficek, RD, says, “Recent research shows that eating dark chocolate can help reduce levels of cortisol and catecholamines (hormones associated with stress), especially for those with high anxiety.” The downside is more psychological than physiological: Some may feel guilty after eating chocolate while dieting to lose weight. Ficek notes, “Remember, chocolate is high in saturated fat and calories, so it’s important to watch how much you consume.”
