Appearance of Planes Smertrios.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Throughout 2023, scientists made several surprising exoplanet discoveries. This year planetary scientists added a number of exciting new worlds to their growing catalog of 5,000+ exoplanets.
It is among the planets that humans have never seen before. Here are five of 10 reviews of some of the most prominent exoplanet discoveries in 2023, as reported on the page Space, Tuesday (26/12/2023).
1. JWST Identification of the Exoplanet Smertrios
Earlier this year, observations made with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) confirmed the presence of heavy elements, carbon and oxygen, in the atmosphere of the distant exoplanet HD149026b. This planet is better known as Smertrios.
This discovery surprised astronomers, because the gas giants of the solar system, such as Jupiter and Saturn, mostly only hold hydrogen and helium in their atmospheres. The general rule is, the larger the planet, the fewer heavy elements in its atmosphere. This discovery turns that idea on its head. The discovery was a hot Jupiter exoplanet with an unexpected atmosphere.
2. TESS Plus One Planet TOI-4600c
NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has added about 2,000 worlds to its exoplanet menu. However, there is one planet in particular, a gas giant called TOI-4600c that is attracting the attention of planetary scientists.
Most exoplanets discovered orbit very close to their home star, but TOI-4600c orbits its star every 482.82 days or 16 months. This makes it the longest year of any planet discovered by TESS. The surface temperature of this gas giant planet also reached minus 78 degrees Celsius.
