Top 5 Countries Facing the Threat of Sinking by 2050 Due to Climate Change Impact

Jakarta

The climate change problem is not a figment. Impact climate change Not only does it have an impact on extreme weather, sinking islands are also another threat.

In 2022, world losses will reach USD 313 billion due to natural disasters. One of them is caused by an increase in earth temperature. In fact, 31,300 people died because of it.

If no changes are made, from reducing carbon emissions to environmentally friendly production, these 10 countries could experience the ‘doomsday’ in 2050. According to Yahoo! Finance, here is the list a country predicted to sink by 2050.

1. King Solomon

There are five islands in the Solomon Islands that were destroyed by sea waves. In fact, the other six islands are already 20% submerged. Therefore, the population was forced to move to higher areas.

Every year, sea water levels increase by 8 mm. Currently, there are still 990 islands in the country.

2. Marshall Islands

A 2021 study by the government and the World Bank shows a rise in sea water levels of one meter. Finally, permanent flooding hit 40% of the buildings in Majuro City.

3. Vanuatu

Per year, sea level rise reaches 6 mm in Vanuatu. There are 260,000 people living on these 82 volcanic islands.

Projected temperature increases of one degree and increasingly severe sea level rises in 2030 make the risk of potential typhoons even stronger. Apart from that, the oceans are becoming more acidic and making it difficult to grow food crops to fight pests/diseases.

It should be noted, in 2015, Vanuatu experienced heavy damage due to Cyclone Pam. Almost all buildings collapsed because of it.

4. Fiji

Furthermore, there is Fiji which is experiencing a rise in sea levels of up to 6 mm per year. Previously, residents living in Vunidogoloa village had to migrate due to rising sea levels which were already at a dangerous stage.

Furthermore, the World Bank reports that several villages in Fiji have lost 15-20 meters of land. This causes the extinction of mangrove forests in order to protect the sustainability of the Fiji region.

5. Tuvalu

Every year, sea water levels rise by 5 mm. The highest point is 4.6 meters above sea water. In addition, Tuvalu also faces the problem of coral reef erosion. Storms often appear in the area there.
