Top 5 Affordable SUVs for Families: Volkswagen Tiguan, Dacia Duster, Renault Koleos, BMW X3, Volvo XC90

The market is categorically migrating to SUVs, regardless of class, size or engine. These cars have reached the top of customer preferences, far surpassing the classic sedans or estate models.

In recent years, the car market has migrated to SUVs, both manufacturers and buyers. Customers want such cars, and manufacturers are meeting the demand with more SUV or crossover models.

These models end up being more expensive than some regular cars since they are bigger, maybe even better equipped, some also have all-wheel drive. So the prices are not the lowest. This is where the second-hand alternatives come in, from which we have chosen 5 models that could lend themselves quite well to those looking for a family car. All cars can be found on the classifieds site Autoscout24.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan is among the most popular compact SUVs on the market right now, and it’s even getting a new generation. Being a model that shares components with other Volkswagen Group cars it is easy to repair and parts are easy to find.

I chose a model from 2008, with the 2.0-liter diesel engine, which produces 140 HP. In addition, it is connected to an automatic box and also has all-wheel drive. Even though it has covered 281,886 kilometers, the car still looks good both outside and inside. There are no visible rips in the upholstery, which is a good sign. The asking price is 7,950 euros.

Dacia Duster

We could almost say that the Duster is the definition of an affordable SUV. Indeed, it has its shortcomings, but it also has good sides, such as off-road abilities or low operating costs.

In this list we have included a first generation example, manufactured in 2010, with only 165,521 kilometers on board. It’s a Laureate trim, with the 1.6-litre petrol engine producing 105bhp. The car has a 6-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel drive system. The asking price is 7,250 euros.

Renault Koleos

It may not be as popular a name as the Tiguan, but the Renault Koleos is worth considering, especially since prices on the used car market are not so high. I found a 2008 model, quite well equipped, with the 2.5-liter gasoline engine, producing 173 HP. The car has 190,296 miles, leather interior, navigation and dual zone climate control. The asking price for this Koleos is 4,440 euros.

BMW X3

We also include some premium models, including a 2010 BMW X3, a first-generation facelift of the Bavarian compact SUV. The car has 268,693 on board and is equipped with the 2.0-liter diesel engine that produces 177 hp. This engine is also mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The car presents well, the exterior is neat and the cabin is very clean with no tears or other defects. Being a premium car, we can expect better quality materials and additional comfort features. The car has navigation, automatic climate control, electric mirrors and xenon headlights. The asking price is 7,645 euros.

Volvo XC90

The last but not the last SUV on our list is the Volvo XC90, a first-generation model. Few cars offer the level of practicality that this SUV has, but also an increased level of safety. Added to these are features such as leather, electric, memory and heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a powerful 2.9-liter engine that produces 272 HP and is connected to an automatic transmission. This 2004 has 283,269 kilometers on it, but it still looks good, even though it’s not a new car at all. The price at which this Volvo XC90 is sold is 7,950 euros.
