You know the Théâtre de Nîmes, the Périscope or even Christian-Liger, but other more confidential places in the heart
neighborhoods also bring live entertainment to life. Our selection.
1 – The Comedy of Nîmes
In 2019, Arno Maxx and Sofi Martel made the crazy bet of opening a café-theatre with around fifty seats in the city center, the Comedy of Nîmes. Four years later, their bet has paid off with a place, totally dedicated to humor, which has won the loyalty of a large audience and won over families. “A little less than a year after our opening, there was Covid, the confinements… We had flair!quips Arno Maxx, the boss who is also an actor. Fortunately, we managed to adapt and we are still here! »
The strength of the place: offering a dense agenda with nearly 300 performances per year, including numerous shows for young audiences. The Comédie de Nîmes also organizes theater classes. In the summer, the small café-theatre goes abroad with its “Wednesdays are comedy” festival at Mas de la Barben. The couple’s next objective: open a second location capable of accommodating between 90 and 110 spectators.

2- The Little Theater of the Placette
It was in 2017 that this theater was born from the ashes of the Petit Subito, a famous Nîmes cultural venue set up by actors Doumée and Henri Le Ny. Managed in association, The Little Theater of the Placette has retained the whimsical and friendly spirit of Subito. The address gives pride of place to theatrical creation and claims to be a culture “accessible to all”. Storytelling, music, reading, open stage… the address has a rich program and also hosts associations for, among other things, theater or singing workshops.
“Multidisciplinarity and connection with the inhabitants of the Placette, such is the DNA of our place”, explains Stella Pinnisi, president of the Petit Théâtre de la Placette association. The address is even at the origin of a festival which comes to life in the heart of its district: the International Meetings of Troubadours of Modern Times (RITTM). In November, you will notably find the play Boire by the company L’Heure du loup (November 24).

3- TelQuel Theater
It has been more than 20 years since the TelQuel Theater is located in the heart of the Pissevin-Valdegour district. A true place of meeting and culture, it is today part of the lives of the inhabitants. Theater workshops are in fact open every week for all ages, and even courses every third Sunday of the month, to perfect your diction or overcome your shyness. This 90-seat performance hall organizes shows for schools and the general public, such as the play The Slipper by Claude Ponti, scheduled for Saturday November 18 at 5:30 p.m. (from 5 years old).
The team, all intermittent performers in the fields of theater, dance and music, also work in schools and socio-cultural centers, so that culture spreads beyond the walls. “Culture wears out when we don’t use it”, likes to say Mica Hanen, active member of TelQuel Théâtre. Tales in the Occitan language have entered the programming of the small Nîmes theater (on display in December) which received a visit from Claude Alranq, a true architect of the revival of southern theater.

4 – Télémac Theater
Located in the premises of the former Labor Exchange, the Telemac Theater is an institution in its field. Nearly 150 students, children and adults, walk the stages every week at this small theater in the city center where people sometimes come from generation to generation. “We also welcome people with disabilities. Theater is a formative and enriching activity for everyone, and everyone here is caring”confides Dominique Petit, president of the Télémac association.
Workshops which lead to the creation of a major amateur theater festival, and whose rehearsals are organized like a real company. “The students play three consecutive days for the end of year show. They must manage their stress, their stage performance and all the theatrical techniques acquired during the year”, explains Henri Noël, theater manager. The Télémac theater will see you in December where Christmas shows for young audiences will be on display every weekend.
