The broadcast of the NPO Radio 2 Top 2000 starts eight hours earlier this year. The ‘list of lists’, as the channel calls the program itself, starts on Christmas Eve at midnight.
“Why wait until morning?”, Explains channel manager Peter de Vries about the move NPO Radio 2. “Midnight on Christmas Eve is a very nice starting point and we have extra space for the music. Now we can play more album versions of certain songs that last a little longer than the single version.”
Last year, the Top 2000 started on December 25 at 8 a.m. On New Year’s Eve, just before midnight, the list closes. Last year it stood Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen again at number 1.
The number 1 of this year is not yet known, because there is still to be voted. This is possible this year from December 1 at 8 a.m. to December 7 at 5 p.m. via the website of NPO Radio 2.
Annual event
The Top 2000 began 21 years ago to usher in the year 2000. Listeners were asked to send in a song, along with a personal story or a memory. The music list was intended to be broadcast only once, but it became such a big success that the radio station decided to make it an annual event.
In previous editions, listeners could also visit the Top 2000 Café in Sound and Vision in Hilversum. Whether that is also possible this year is not yet known. “As soon as we know that, we will of course make it known through our channels,” said the channel.
