We have ten tips for you on how you can save energy and money in everyday life in your own four walls and reduce your household costs.
1. Tipp: Simple and inexpensive: All electrical devices can be controlled via switchable multiple sockets or radio-controlled sockets. With radio-controlled sockets, you can even do it from the comfort of your couch.
2. Tipp: You can get an electricity meter from a hardware store for around 15 euros. This allows you to track down the energy guzzlers in your household and determine which device draws power when it is not on but is plugged into the socket.
Lower room temperature
If you lower the room temperature, you can save a lot of money and energy.

3. Tipp: Lowering the room temperature saves up to 6 percent in heating costs per degree by which the room temperature is lowered! To do this, you should measure the room temperature and install heating thermostats that can be used to regulate the room temperature.
Level 3 on the heating thermostat usually corresponds to 20 degrees Celsius. Level 4 only means 4 degrees more and does not warm up faster! 20 degrees is recommended for occupied rooms and children’s rooms, 22 degrees in the bathroom and at least 16 degrees in bedrooms and adjoining rooms.
4. Tipp: Keep doors closed between rooms at different temperatures! This saves up to 5 percent on heating costs. The size of a radiator is specifically designed for a room. If you want to heat several rooms with one radiator, no room will be really warm and energy will be wasted.
5. Tipp: Good insulation is important. Both for the outside facade and inside.

6. Tipp: A so-called radiator reflection film is quick and easy to install in the interior. This ensures that more heat from the radiator goes into the room and not into the outside wall. The films are available in hardware stores and cost between 5 and 15 euros per square meter.
You have to cut them to size and attach them behind the radiator with double-sided tape. Danger: Tape off the entire area behind the radiator, otherwise thermal bridges will arise and this will lead to mold formation.
And wrap the heating pipes in the basement with insulation tubes. This also reduces heat loss on the way to the radiator.
7. Tipp: Replace the seal around both the window frame and the window sashes. Sealing tape is also available at hardware stores. And that also applies to doors. What you often don’t think about are the roller shutter boxes.
8. Tipp: Roller shutter boxes can also be insulated – there are specially tailored insulation materials available at hardware stores.
Insulation measures coordinate with the landlord, because if, for example, you cause damage to the building structure (mold), then this can have unpleasant consequences.
Lowering the hot water temperature
Reducing your hot water consumption can save you a lot of energy and money.
9. Tipp: You can save money and energy by lowering the hot water temperature. However, you have to be careful not to lower the water temperature too much, otherwise legionella can spread. These are germs that multiply particularly quickly between 25 and 45 degrees and can lead to health problems.
Therefore, the temperature in the hot water tank should be at least 60 degrees and at least 55 degrees at the tapping point. This means you are on the safe side. Another saving option is to only heat the hot water to the desired maximum temperature at fixed times, for example when showering in the morning and lower the rest of the day.
10. Tipp: Reduce overall water consumption: Attach saving heads to showerheads and aerators on the taps. By the way, a big mistake: Washing by hand uses more energy and also more water. Run the dishwasher and washing machine on the eco program. This means you save up to 70 percent on water and up to 50 percent on energy.
