No uniform standards for measuring the reach of podcasts in Germany

How can podcast numbers be measured reliably? While magazines and newspapers, radio and television rely on uniform standards, there is currently no such standard for podcasts in Germany. The charts used in this article are based on the rankings of Apple and Spotify, currently the largest platforms for podcasts. However, they each use their own criteria when compiling the charts.

The USA is already one step ahead in this regard and uses the so-called IAB standard for the uniform measurement of podcast downloads. This standard, launched by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, serves, among other things, to offer podcasters and advertisers more comparability of reach on the market. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is an international trade association of the online advertising industry that represents the interests of the digital advertising and media industry and advocates for unification and standardization.

Players such as Audible, Libsyn, MidRoll Media, Podtrac and Nielsen have participated in the standard. Platforms such as Spotify also use the guide in the USA to measure the performance of a podcast.

How are the charts on iTunes created?

Since iTunes is currently the most used platform for podcasts, it is usually the first port of call for current podcast charts, which Apple publishes several times a day and makes available to all users. In fact, however, nobody except Apple knows exactly how the iTunes charts work. The ranking does not seem to be based on downloads in descending order. SFor example, podcaster Daniel Friesenecker managed to reach number one in the Austrian iTunes charts with just three downloads.

How exactly the charts are created is anyone’s guess – it’s conceivable that they’re a combination of different factors, such as subscriber numbers, views, ratings, downloads and other user interactions. In addition, the iTunes podcast charts are updated several times a day, so there can be several most popular podcasts per day.
