In addition to a tsunami of sequels, there will of course also be a warehouse of remakes on the agendas of cinemas in the coming years. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing.
As long as it has a strong creative team and is retold with fresh energy instead of conveying that it is only about making money. Below are 10 titles that could surprise you:
Chronicles of Narnia
Netflix has purchased the rights to start a completely new series and at least the first two films will be directed by none other than Greta Gerwig (Barbie).
Nosferatu
This is a retelling that is also welcome, more than 100 years after the original and with Robert Eggers (The Witch, Lighthouse, The Northman) at the helm, this can hardly end in disappointment.
Wolf Man
Was originally supposed to be part of the Dark Universe, but is now becoming more of a standalone. Behind the camera is Leigh Whannell who with The Invisible Man showed that he could make a strong horror.
Fantastic Four
After two mediocre film adaptations in 2005/2007 and the abominable version from 2015, the foursome is finally back in the hands of Marvel Studios and let’s be honest, it can’t get any worse than the above three, can it?
Blade
Wesley Snipes’ half-human vampire hunter is not nearly as popular as today’s superheroes, but it did lay the foundation for how we view it today and therefore deserves a remake. With Mahershala Ali as his replacement, this is also one to look forward to.
Twisters
Twister is and remains one of the best disaster films from the 90s and Twisters will very much be a sequel, but mainly a standalone reboot with better effects, a fresh story and only new cast members.
Frankenstein
A modern take on the monster story with Guillermo del Toro as creator and Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz in the leading roles. Do you need to know more to be convinced?
The Naked Gun
This could be one of the big standouts. Liam Neeson turned out to be a real action hero in 2008, so why not a comedian? Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) may lead to everything going well.
Superman: Legacy
If there is anyone who can give the renewed DC Universe the energy boost it currently needs, it is James Gunn. And with a beloved hero like Superman, it’s always a good idea to start cautiously.
Dracula
Chloé Zhao may try to update the blood-sucking Transylvanian Count. And although no one has had as much varied success as Dracula, Zhao with an Oscar under his belt is not a bad name to immediately write off the project in advance.
