Top 10 Affordable and Delicious Store-Brand Products Revealed

Products from store brands are usually cheaper than their advertised counterparts, but they have a dubious reputation.

Many large supermarkets have their own private label brands. Below them, shops produce familiar products, such as cheeses, cereals, and canned goods. For example, at Auchan it is the “Every Day” brand, and at Lenta it is “365 days”.

I like to find opening items among such products and have studied the assortment of private label supermarkets quite well. I’ll tell you about ten proven products from stores I visit regularly.

What products will I tell you about?

Blue cheese

This cheese is rarely available at Perekrestok, but when it is available, it is often at a discount. Disassembled quickly

Cheese from “Perekrestok” from the private label “Market” became a real discovery for me. It is made in the Voronezh region, the shelf life is two months. The taste and texture are more interesting and richer than the price suggests.

The cheese is tender and at the same time spicy, dense and quite soft. You can eat it for breakfast with coffee or take it as a snack with wine.

Children’s poultry sausages

Typically, at Perekrestok, Green Line sausages are kept in a separate refrigerator along with other private label products. But it happens with other meat products: I advise you not to look and ask the store employees

I usually don’t eat sausages, sausages, and bratwurst because such foods contain flavor enhancers, color fixatives, and additives that make me thirsty later. However, the Green Line children’s sausages from another Perekrestok private label are not bad. There are options with pumpkin and broccoli, a mixture of turkey and beef, but most of all I like poultry sausages.

Ingredients: chicken fillet, water, butter, egg melange. The sausages have a delicate and delicate taste. I eat them for breakfast: I cut them in half lengthwise and make toast with butter and lettuce.

Natural drinking yoghurt

STM: “Green Line”
Net: “Crossroads”
Price: 75 ₽ for 500 g

These yogurts are often discounted

Another favorite Green Line product of mine. The yogurt is unsweetened and quite filling due to its fat content of 2.5%.

Contains only normalized milk and fermentation of lactic acid microorganisms. If you need a snack on the go, but don’t want to chew a bun, one of these yogurts is a good option.

Oat cookies

These cookies are not always available at Pyaterochka – as an alternative, you can take “Maria” from the same “Red Price”

I don’t buy oatmeal cookies regularly, but sometimes I want to feel that same taste from childhood. I tried different options – simple, with raisins and chocolate chips, but in the end I settled on the regular Red Price cookies from Pyaterochka. The composition may be alarming at first glance due to the food additives E471 and E322. In fact, these are harmless thickeners.

The taste of the cookies is a little spicy, the texture is rough – unlike the more delicate versions with raisins. But for me this is the same taste of school and student times.

Cod liver

There is a disclaimer on the packaging that the product is made from frozen raw materials, but this is the case with most similar canned foods

I love cod liver more than other fish by-products: it is very filling and nutritious, it contains essential fatty acids, vitamins A and D. I eat it in the cold season – I make toast with it.

Over the past couple of years, high-quality cod liver has become much more expensive, so one day, in search of an inexpensive option, I took cod liver under the Lenta private label. And I was pleasantly surprised: the offal turned out to be quite worthy.

Ingredients: only Pacific cod liver, salt, pepper, bay leaf. The offal does not crumble, is elastic, and is convenient to spread on bread. The liver is nourishing, but not overly fatty, and the seasonings were not overdone either.

Linen halva

For me this is the best halva I have ever tried.

Halva is one of my favorite desserts. But when I reduced the amount of sugar in my diet, the regular one became too cloying and heavy for me. Once I tried linen from Perekrestok, and since then I don’t understand how I lived without it before.

Flax halva “Green Line” is dense, not cloying, with an interesting, slightly astringent taste. It’s difficult to eat a lot of this dessert – I divide it into small pieces and eat it with tea or coffee. I can confidently recommend it to those who do not avoid sugar.

Buckwheat flakes

375 g in Lenta according to the store card costs 80 ₽ – this is cheaper than a similar volume of buckwheat flakes from other manufacturers

I love buckwheat, but cooking a whole pot of cereal is not always justified. Heated porridge from the refrigerator is not as tasty as fresh one, but for the sake of a small portion you usually don’t want to, and there’s no time to bother.

I found a solution in the form of buckwheat flakes from Lenta: they do not require cooking, you can brew any desired volume. I usually brew a small bowl for breakfast, salt, pepper and season with aromatic oil.

Seasoning for mulled wine

Using a store card, you can buy a set for 110 ₽

The budget set includes zest and dried orange slices, cardamom, allspice and cinnamon sticks. During the cold season, I often prepare non-alcoholic mulled wine with this set. It turns out to be a pleasant warming winter drink, and the seasonings give that very Christmas aroma.

Lenta does not always have a set specifically for their private label, but if you find it, take it for a try: it seems to me that it is optimal in terms of the ratio between price and quality.

Country-style sauerkraut

I recommend keeping an eye on the packaging: a bucket of cabbage may leak

Sauerkraut is one of my favorite snacks. I tried many times to find good sauerkraut in stores and markets, but often I came across a product with a chemical taste and overly salty. The best store-bought option I found was cabbage under the Market private label from Perekrestok.

Perekrestok also has sauerkraut from Green Line, but I didn’t like it. Therefore, if you choose between these two private labels, I recommend “Market”.

Broiler chicken carcass

I recommend keeping an eye on the packaging: some carcasses leak, so take a separate bag for them at the checkout so as not to stain other purchases

Over the past couple of years, chicken meat has become much more expensive, but Lenta’s 365 Days chickens are still a budget option. The carcasses do not look very attractive, and in the warm season the bags may leak.

The taste is not as sad as it might seem. I use this bird for soup, onion pies and seasoned chicken. If you want to bake the carcass in the oven, take a more expensive option: broiler chicken “365 days” is a bit dry.
