A new phenomenon application is entertaining the web at the start of 2021. It is Toonme, an app that turns anyone into a Disney or Pixar character. Many internet users have tested the application and shared the results on social networks. Some people have fun applying Disney and Pixar filters on public figures, including movie stars, but also politicians. The point is that the renderings are particularly successful or at least funny.
The app uses algorithms that analyze user selfies and turn them into cartoons, just like any filter on Instagram, Snapchat or others. Available in web version, Toonme also offers several different filters, but the most popular are obviously those of the firm with big ears and Pixar.
A concept reminiscent of another photo editing application, FaceApp. In July 2019, the aging app had also met with immense success on the web, but quickly came under heavy criticism regarding its data collection. The new popularity of Toonme also leads some to question the privacy policy of the new phenomenon.
What treatment of personal data?
“We collect your name, email address, username, social media information and other information that you provide to us when you register, create an account, contact us by email or use our services”, may – read on the website of the application, “We may also obtain information from other companies and combine it with the information we collect about the Services; for example, when you link your account with Facebook, we may have access to your name and profile picture. “
A little further on the same page, we can also read; “We may share your personal (and non-personal) information with third parties to serve you relevant advertising (find out how advertising partners collect and use data) and market our products, but we will not sell your personal information.”
Suffice to say that Toonme happily uses your personal data, but this is still limited compared to FaceApp which indicated that it could have data on its users irrevocably and perpetually. It is still better to know what you are exposed to by creating an account on the application.
The app can be used without sharing personal data
Toonme nevertheless specifies that “the photos and the original results are automatically deleted from the servers two weeks after the last interaction”. There is nothing exceptional about Toonme’s privacy policy, many photo editing apps apply the same type of terms of use. Moreover, the developers of Toonme offer many other applications of the same kind, with other filters.
It should be noted that it is quite possible to take advantage of the application, phenomenon of the moment – a hashtag has been set up #ToonmeChallenge – without creating an account or sharing personal data. Just go to the web version of the app.
