On IC neonatology of the Beatrix Children’s Hospital (UMCG) admits babies born after the 24th week of pregnancy or who need additional help to support vital functions before, during or after delivery.
Babies born before 24 weeks of pregnancy often do not survive delivery. If a baby survives birth, treatment aims to make him feel as good as possible instead of surviving.
After 24 weeks of pregnancy, the baby is placed in an incubator in the Neonatology ward. Just over half of premature babies survive this. With each week that comes, the chance that the baby will survive increases. After 26 weeks this is already 71%, after 27 weeks from 80% to 90% and after 28 weeks also 95%.
Premature babies who end up in the NICU will remain in the ICU until at least the 30th week. After this time, it is checked whether the child can be treated in a pediatric ward.
