Roger Federer’s mini comeback in Switzerland is over before it could pick up speed. That is sobering – for the fans, for the tournament and above all for himself. He will now sit down with his team, weigh up the positives and negatives from the two hours in Geneva and decide, as in the days leading up to Roland Garros goes on.
–
The positive is easy to say: his body seems ready, the hard training of the last few months has paid off, at least in the fitness area. The 39-year-old feels much better than after the two matches at the first comeback in Doha, where it became “precarious after two hours”.
–
Unfortunately, Federer now has no more serious battles in which he can play out his good form. Which brings us to the negative. After a one-year break, Roger urgently needs practice in serious fights and in hectic everyday tournament life if he doesn’t just want to play a supporting role in the upcoming Grand Slams.
–
That would not be worthy of him, but it will hardly be avoidable in Roland Garros. He himself is realistic: “How could I talk about a victory in Paris? I know my limitations. “
–
Fortunately, the sand event is not his main goal, but the grass season, which leads to Wimbledon via Halle and maybe even at short notice via Stuttgart. However, the way to his personal Garden of Eden is only a short one. And there are few chances to compete with top players in order to be prepared for Nadals or Djokovics. Probably too little.
