Tonsils: what is the danger of their removal

Previously, doctors removed tonsils from patients – a paired organ was considered useless. Later it turned out that the tonsils actually perform important functions, and removing them is dangerous for the patient.

The tonsils or tonsils consist of lymphoid tissue that produces cells responsible for immunity. During a cold, the tonsils turn red, swell and bring discomfort to the patient. Because of this, a negative attitude has developed towards the tonsils. In the USSR, tonsils were removed without anesthesia. They were pulled out “for the prevention” of various colds.

As more modern experts have established, the absence of tonsils does not help to cope with colds. On the contrary, the procedure for their removal opens the “doors” to infections in the human body. During inflammation, the tonsils produce a large number of leukocyte cells that protect the body from an external “aggressor”. In addition, the paired organ performs a hematopoietic function. The glands produce cells that form the normal composition of the blood.

Doctors have proven that a person who has had their tonsils removed is twice as likely to get various colds. At the same time, in many patients who do not have a tonsil, the disease proceeds with complications.

Nowadays, surgery to remove a paired organ is rarely performed. It can be done in case of a complex and advanced disease, for example, chronic tonsillitis – inflammation of the tonsils with the formation of plugs in their loose surface. However, most doctors prefer drug treatment. Modern pharmacology helps patients cope with inflamed tonsils.
