Tonsillitis- Hossam Mowafi explains the treatment methods

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, a professor of critical cases at Kasr Al-Ainy College of Medicine, confirmed that tonsillitis not only affects children, adults can get it too.

Mowafi said, during his host of the “Bab Al-Khalq” program, hosted by journalist Mahmoud Saad, that tonsillitis that occurs at intervals can be cured by taking antibiotics under the supervision of a doctor.

The critical care professor added that antibiotics won’t work in treating the tonsils if they become infected with inflammation on a monthly basis, stressing that eradication is the only way to get rid of their pain.

Muwafi cited a research paper on potential complications of tonsillectomy, noting that researchers found a prevalence of colon cancer among people who had them removed.

Throat pain is moderate to severe and lasts for one to two weeks.

Mild fever for several days.

Bad breath for up to two weeks.

Swelling of the tongue.

Pain in the ear, neck or jaw.

After the tonsillectomy, the patient may also experience bleeding on the first day, and will continue for 10 days, as well as difficulty swallowing and shortness of breath, according to the International Society for Anesthesia Research’s “Open Anesthesia” website.
