A fundraiser for the families of Australian children who died on Thursday in a tragic incident with a bouncy castle has now raised more than one million Australian dollars (about 700,000 euros).

The accident happened at a primary school in Devonport, on the island of Tasmania, where the end of the school year was being celebrated. The wind lifted the inflatable playground equipment into the air, after which children fell to the ground from a height of about 10 meters, according to witnesses. Five children aged 11 and 12 were killed. Four other children were seriously injured. Three of them were in hospital in critical condition on Saturday.

The initiator of the fundraiser claims to be overwhelmed by all the donations. Zoe Smith had hoped to raise $1,000 for the relatives, but the counter is currently at about 1.1 million. “I think it just shows how shocked everyone is and how close we are as a community,” Smith said of the action.

Police have launched an investigation into the fatal accident. It is not clear how the playground equipment got off the ground. Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited the monument of flowers, toys and personal messages that sprang up outside the primary school on Saturday. He previously spoke of an “unthinkable heartbreaking” incident. Morrison also said that the government will support the families and other victims both with victim support and financially.
